Don’t Forget the Want Ads As an Employment Source

Posted by admin | Uncategorized |

By Sharon Hunter

The local daily newspaper is still your best employment source guide. Each want ad looking for workers in various fields is taken out for a week, two weeks, or longer. The daily want ads are probably more fruitful in actually finding a job than the Sunday want ads. Some employers only advertise on weekdays and some only on Sundays. Your best bet in finding employment is to look through the local want ads of your town’s newspaper on both Sundays and weekdays.

Some other newspaper type employment sources are the free papers that one can pick up in such locations as outside of supermarkets or wherever free real estate brochures can be found. Looking through want ads is the cheapest and least aggravating way of finding employment. The want ad will give you a place and a number or where you can mail your resume to without having to go through the personal history receptionist of a placement service.

Trying to find work is problematical because you want to find a job but you don’t want to have to pay for it unless you have no other choice. The daily newspapers and the free bulletins are excellent employment source options that could probably land you a job before you could get one from going through placement agencies interviews and screenings.

With a want ad, your future employer can screen you for actual employment. There is no better way to get hired than to talk directly with the company that is going to employ you. In some cases, placement services don’t send your name and credentials unless their regular clients are first employed. With want ads, you can send your own credentials through a resume to the company that is hiring without taking a place in a queue.

As well as daily newspapers and free local town news sources, another great employment source are popular magazines that have want ads along with other advertisements. These magazines have want ads that are looking for qualified people and are at salaries that make them inviting to respond to and since magazine want ads are expected to be on the shelf for as long as the magazine, they are in no hurry to fill their positions.

Tips on How to Dress For an Interview

Posted by admin | Uncategorized |

By Saira A Varawalla

When the time comes to go for an interview for your dream job, apart from the thinking about what you are going to say and making sure that you have all your documents you must also spend some time planning what you are going to wear at the interview. Even though your credentials are more important that the way you look, your attire is the first thing the interviewer is going to see.

For women the important thing is to dress in clothes which are not revealing. Women should avoid being heavily made up. A little bit of makeup and perfume is alright. A business suite with slacks or a sufficiently long skirt should do the trick. Basically, the attire and the accessories a woman wears should be toned down. Bright colors are not a very good idea as the professional world identifies better with neutral solid colors.

As far as men are concerned, there is little scope for making a mistake when it comes to attire. Men can wear their business suites again in toned down colors. Body piercings and funky hairstyles should be completely avoided. Hair should be neatly combed and body piercings should be removed.

Basically both men and women should dress professionally. What you like to do in your personal life should come with you to your workplace. Chewing gum is offensive and so is a cell phone that is constantly ringing. Make sure to keep these tips in mind before you walk in for an interview. These tips may not guarantee that you will get the job but at the very least they will help you with your first impression.

How to Find a Good Headhunter

Posted by admin | Uncategorized |

By Saira A Varawalla

A headhunter is a person or a company who basically on the payroll of a company and his primary function is to seek out the best people for a job and recruit them. Headhunters may work for more than one company at a time. They can be useful for a job seeker but there are certain things a job seeker must take into consideration before working with a head hunter.

In order to get a good headhunter you can begin with asking around. Getting in touch with other job seekers or people who have landed jobs through headhunters makes a lot of sense. They will know who are the best headhunters and will also know which one of them is genuine.

Once you have shortlisted the headhunter you want to work with, set up a meeting and discuss with them exactly what you are looking for in a job. When you speak to the headhunter about yourself make sure everything you say to them is the truth. If you lie to them, they will not be able to help you find a good job. Also, give the headhunter a copy of your resume and take their advice regarding the same.

If a headhunter speaks to you about a company, don’t only take his word for it. Spend some time asking people and doing your own research on the internet about the company. Headhunters get paid to recruit people so it is obvious that no matter how good or bad the company is, they will try to convince you to take the job.

There are so many headhunters available today that you have to be careful who to work with and who not to work with. If you feel that the headhunter you have contacted is giving you the run around or is overly commercial and is trying to sell you a company then it makes sense to move on and find someone else.

Canadian Job Market Recovering (Slowly)

Posted by admin | Uncategorized |

By Andrea Davis

The Canadian job market seems to be recovering. Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey reported that employment increased by 27,000 in August 2009. The biggest gains were in part-time work where employment rose by 31,000, and the private sector, in which jobs increased by 49,000. According to the report, full-time work has dropped by 486,000 (-3.5%) since October 2008. However, taking into account the increase in the number of jobs in the part time sector of 99,000 (+3.1%), total employment has fallen by 387,000 (-2.3%).

Perhaps most encouraging is the fact that employment in Canada has fallen by only 31,000 over the last five months, compared to 357,000 during the five months following October 2008. Although it’s going to take some time before the job market really picks, up the trend is positive and it appears that the worst is over.

Industries such as retail, wholesale, finance, insurance, real estate and leasing saw increases in the number of jobs in August. The greatest job increases were in retail and wholesale trade, followed by finance, insurance, real estate and leasing. Employment also increased in most service industries. However, total job gains were reduced in part by losses in certain services, including business, building, educational and other support services. The manufacturing sector continued to lose jobs in August while construction was up slightly. According to the report, “employment in construction has stabilized.

Employment was up in most provinces. Manitoba’s employment was up but the unemployment rate edged up to 5.7% as more people participated in the job market. Employment was also up In Newfoundland and Labrador, and the unemployment rate fell 1.5 percentage points to 15.6%. Employment in Ontario increased slightly as it did in July. There wasn’t much change in Quebec’s employment numbers in August. Saskatchewan showed a “notable decline” in jobs, according to the report.

Despite the apparent improvements in the Canadian job market, if you’re looking for a job right now, career opportunities probably don’t seem to be plentiful. I believe, however, that the August job numbers are the beginning of a positive trend. While it may take time to recover, it’s clear that that the recovery in the Canadian job market has begun. Although we shouldn’t read too much into a one month report, it’s encouraging that the upturn in the job market isn’t limited to a small number of industries and that several provinces saw improvements.
